That is really odd. Can you mail the output of this test:

echo foobar > /root/file
aide --init
mv /var/lib/aide/aide.db.new /var/lib/aide/aide.db
aide --check
echo foo > /root/file
aide --check
echo foobarfoo > /root/file
aide --check

You might have to add -c to the aide commands to point to your config file.
